5 Tips to Prepare for Your Newborn Session at Home in San Diego, California

Newborn

Bringing a new baby home is one of life’s most joyful—and sometimes chaotic—moments. Between sleepless nights and endless snuggles, the last thing you want to worry about is packing everyone up for a photo session. That’s why so many San Diego families choose in-home newborn photography: it’s relaxed, convenient, and beautifully personal.

As a professional San Diego newborn photographer specializing in-home sessions, I know how important it is to capture baby’s fleeting early days. To help you get the most from your session, here are my top five tips for preparing your home—and your hearts—for newborn photos you’ll treasure forever. Click here to see inspiration.

1. Prioritize Light: Open Your Blinds and Curtains
The key to timeless, newborn portraits is soft, abundant light. Before your session, look around your home at the time of day your photographer is scheduled to arrive. Note which rooms have the best light—typically those with big windows facing east or west.

On the day of your session, open all blinds and curtains to let in as much light as possible. Turn off overhead lights, which can create unwanted yellow tones. As your San Diego newborn photographer I’ll guide you, but bright, airy rooms are ideal for capturing your baby’s delicate features and your family’s connection.

2. Tidy Select Spaces, Not the Whole House
First off, relax. Your portrait session is about your love for baby and each other; not a photoshoot for a home magazine. As your photographer, I only need a few key areas decluttered, such as:
• The nursery (or crib area)

• The master bedroom bed (neutral, solid bedding works best)

• A cozy living room corner
Focus on removing items like diaper bags, laundry baskets, or cluttered nightstands from these spaces. Don’t stress about perfection—the goal is to create a clean, calm backdrop for your portraits, not a spotless home.

3. Choose Neutral Outfits for Effortless Elegance
Your wardrobe sets the tone for your session. Neutral, light colors like creams, whites, beiges, or muted pastels work best for indoors and create a cohesive, timeless look.
For moms, a simple dress or flowy top can highlight your natural beauty, while dads look great in a well-fitted solid tee or button-down. Bare baby skin, swaddles, or simple onesies are perfect for newborns. Avoid busy patterns or bright colors, which can distract from your sweet baby.

4. Keep Baby Cozy and Content
A happy baby is the heart of every successful newborn session. Before your newborn session, feed your baby so they’re full and sleepy—these are the moments when we can capture those dreamy, curled-up poses.

Crank up the thermostat a few degrees warmer than usual; newborns are most comfortable (and cooperative) when it’s warm. If you use white noise for naps, keep it running—it can help lull baby into a peaceful sleep and minimize startling sounds during the shoot.

Remember: your session is baby focused. Crying or fussing is perfectly normal! I allow plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, and soothing breaks. Patience is part of the process.

5. Relax and Embrace the Moment
Your newborn session is not just about photos—it’s about preserving the genuine emotions of these early days together. Don’t worry if your toddler wants to run around or your pets want to join us. These unscripted moments often become the most cherished images. Lean into your own connection with your little one. Cuddle, kiss, and laugh—the more you relax, the more authentic your photos will feel.
In-home sessions also make it easy to include siblings, pets, or special family heirlooms. The images we create together will reflect not only your baby’s earliest days but also the environment where you first built your family memories.
